What Are Reference Materials?
When purchasing products or using services in everyday life, such as electrical appliances, food products, and medical services, we rely on various types of information including power consumption, weight, caloric content, volume, blood pressure, and many other values. The process of determining these values is generally referred to as measurement or metrology. In the field of analytical measurement, reference materials are used to ensure the reliability and accuracy of measurement results. Reference materials serve as benchmarks for validating analytical values and methods, as well as for calibrating analytical and measurement instruments.
More than 10,000 reference materials are supplied by organizations in over 25 countries worldwide. These materials are registered in the international reference material database, COMAR (COde d'indexation des MAteriaux de Reference). In Japan, a particularly large number of reference materials are available for steel and inorganic materials, supplied by research institutions and industry organizations.
